As an avid conservationist and all round animal lover, I have always had a pretty good grasp on how much the cosmetic industry hides its ugly truths about the use of animal products by finding loopholes in their labeling. However I was shocked to find out that luxury cosmetic brands are a key contributor to the peril of one of the oceans most at risk species - the shark. There is practically no species of shark that is not in danger of extinction...
The awesome Lily Cole has spoken out to expose the cosmetics industry's use of a substance called Squalene, an oil extracted from the livers of sharks. The sharks are caught, butchered for their livers and fins while still alive, and thrown back into the ocean, trying to swim fin-less as they bleed to death. It's an incredibly gloomy and morbid end just to make people pretty isn't it?
Our generation should be educated consumers who know whats in the products we're buying so we can make choices about what we want to support and what we don't. Sneaky labeling takes this right away from us.
I love that Lily Cole is speaking up about this and hope that ugly stories like this will eventually become a thing of the past. I hope more influential people like Lily speak up and tell us the truths we need to hear.
A big high five to Lily Cole.
