I tried 4 heat styling sprays to see for myself what the difference is. Having super curly hair, I’m constantly using heat stylers and it certainly takes its toll on my chemically ravaged hair (see my “Fro Woe” blog for the full story of my life-long hair abuse). When my friends who swear by heat styling sprays told me about how much they straighten their hair with irons and can immediately see the difference when they don’t use their spray to when they do – I was intrigued.
I blow dry my hair at such a high heat setting, that by the end, the smell of my beautiful organic, eco friendly hippy hair shampoo and conditioner has gone and all that’s left is the smell of scorched hair :( boo. Funnily enough – this same burnt hair smell phenomenon became the ‘test’ for heat sprays.
Now let's meet the contenders...

Nexxus Heat Promend Heat Protection Styling Spray
For frizzy, curly hair like mine, this product works wonders! It leaves my hair shiny and smooth but I don't love the smell - it's too perfumed.
The scorch test: My hair still smells slightly scorched :(

Frizz-Ease Heat Defeat Protective Styling Spray
Wow - what an annoying sprayer. It just kinda squirts clumps of product instead of distributing it. Given that the product is slightly sticky, this clumping causes sticky spots in the hair.
The scorch test: My hair doesn't smell scorchy (yes that's a word - well it is now:)...but now its sticky instead *sigh*

TRESemme Heat Defence Styling Spray
Again with the sprayer? Really? Who designs these things?! It just kinda squirts a stream. Don't love the smell. Also doesn't seem to do anything, my hair is the same as without the spray.
The scorch test: My hair smells burnt as usual.

Trevor Sorbie Beautifully Straightened Heat Defence Blowdry Spray
Finally! An actual old skool spray - that sprays! Love the way it smells and my hair is shiny and smooth after my blow dry.
The scorch test: YAY! My hair does not smell 'scorchy'! Instead it smells of Trevor Sorbie yumminess!

So I think we have a clear winner. As much as I loved the way my hair looked and felt after the Nexxus spray, the burnt smell can't make me help but think that its not proctecting my hair from the heat. Trevor Sorbie wins hands down for me! I always now use this, even on my dry hair before I flat iron and it works great.
Top marks for Trevor ;)
Unfortunately I couldn't find any of these products on the PETA list for animal testing or animal products - so my search continues for a spray that performs like Trevor Sorbie's one and ticks all my eco-friendly, animal friendly boxes. Give me a shout if anyone finds this dream product!
